Confederate Brigadier General James Jay Archer: Civil War Period Carte de Visite. Approximately 2.5" x 4" with a C. D. Fredericks & Co., New York imprint on the verso and recto. A handsome portrait of General Archer in uniform. James J. Archer (1817-1864) participated in many important battles during the war including the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was wounded on the first day of Gettysburg and captured, giving him the distinction of being the first general officer captured from Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Archer suffered from bad health during his Civil War service and as a result he was exchanged in the late summer of 1864. He returned to Confederate service but succumbed to health problems in October, 1864. The corners of the mounts are slightly trimmed, but the image is in excellent condition.
