    Confederate Brigadier General and Confederate States Secretary General Robert Augustus Toombs Carte de Visite and Autograph U.S. Senate Free-Frank Transmittal Envelope. (1) CDV of Toombs in civilian clothing, approximately 2.5" x 4" with an E. & H. T. Anthony studio mark on the verso. Very good condition. (2) Autograph transmittal envelope, 5.25" x 3", competed in Toombs' hand "Free / A. Toombs / U.S.S.". Only the face of the envelope is present. Very good. Toombs (1810-1885) was the Confederacy's first Secretary of State as well as serving a military role as general. He was wounded in the hand at Antietam subsequently resigning his commission on March 4, 1863.
