Colonel Elmer Ellsworth: A Terrific Memorial Photo Display on Board. As issued by Anthony/ Brady in 1861 to honor the friend of Lincoln and the first officer killed in the Civil War. The 13.5" x 10.75" placard features CDVs of Ellsworth and Francis E. Brownell (the avenger of Ellsworth who shot his killer), flanking a large round albumen of the Marshall House in Alexandria, where the incident took place. All lettering and the "frames" around the three photos are in gold.

Ellsworth was famously shot while tearing down a Confederate flag hung from the hotel, which was actually visible from the Capitol. A wide range of items honoring Ellsworth were sold in the early days of the War, of which this is almost certainly the most impressive and significant. We can find only one other example offered at auction, sold by a well-known Cincinnati auction firm in November 2005 for $16,675. That specimen appeared to be in better overall condition, but was apparently trimmed by about 0.5". The trimming appears from the auction photo to have cut off approximately half of the bottom line of printing. This present example is in nice overall display condition, with light, even toning and some scattered brown moisture marks. An outstanding early Civil War display.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
