Civil War Period Albumen View of the U. S. S. Essex 4 1/2" X 7" and likely a period copy from a carte-de-visite. Very fine quality, exceptional condition. Shows the famed 'timberclad', then named the New Era apparently fuelling and loading stores. The Essex was originally converted into a 'timberclad' from a river ferry. which was constructed at the Page & Bacon Navy Yard in New Albany, Indiana in 1856. By October 1861 the need for additional iron clads resulted in the ship being renovated and converted into an ironclad. She participated in the Cumberland River Expedition and, in an engagement against Ft. Henry, her boiler burst when struck by a Confederate shell. She was again renovated and heavily engaged throughout the remainder of the war, finally being decommissioned in 1870. Very scarce image.
