    Description

Civil War: Albumen Photographs with Connection to Illustrator Xanthus Russell Smith. Group of eleven albumen photographs of Civil War locales and fortifications. Five are not mounted and six are mounted. Some of these were eventually used in publications. Most have pencil notations indicating the subject. The unmounted photos are 3" square and 4" square. Subjects include: a series of four numbered views of an unnamed southern fort, possibly Fort Pulaski, following prolonged Union bombardment. The larger albumen marked "Gardner" shows a Union soldier sitting in front of the "House near Fort Stevens showing effect of shot during Early's attack on Washington". President Lincoln had his hat shot off by a rebel sniper while visiting Fort Stevens. The mounted albumens are generally 3" x 3" up to 4" x 4", not counting the mounts. These show "View near Ft. Darling James River Va.", "Exterior view of side Fort Pulaski", "Fort Beauregard Bay Point St. Helena Is.", "Graves of Sailors at Hilton Head, S.C./ Port Royal Expedition", "Distant view of branch Fort Pulaski" and "Exterior view of rear Fort Pulaski". The last two are also marked "Xanthus Smith has had this". The various notations seem to indicate these photos were being collated and prepped for publication. Xanthus Smith (1839-1929) was an artist who served in the United States Navy during the Civil War, assisting in the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. The photos presented here represent sites and events that Smith personally witnessed and sketched.
