    Description

Champ Ferguson Carte-de-Visite. CDV of Confederate guerilla Champ Ferguson, signed by him on the lower front border. This clean carte has gold rules and a back stamp for "Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland... Nashville, Tenn." Ferguson was a Tennessee native with a reputation for brutality and lawlessness. He served under John Hunt Morgan during Morgan's first raid into Kentucky. He indiscriminately killed prisoners of war and African Americans. In May of 1865, he was arrested by Federal authorities and charged in the deaths of 53 people. Ferguson admitted killing over 100 people personally, including many of those listed in the indictment. His defense consisted primarily of his status as an enemy combatant. Not surprisingly, he was convicted and executed in October 1865.
