Description
Carte de Visit of Identified Black Soldier Sgt. Charles English, Company C.,108th U. S. Colored Infantry. An exceptional full standing photograph of Sgt. English in uniform by an unidentified photographer. In August of 1865 the sergeant was forced to stay behind in Vicksburg due to poor health when the Commander of the U. S. Army issued special order No. 22 which transferred the 108th from Vicksburg to Jackson. English succumbed to his illness, passing away at a Vicksburg military hospital.
Another CDV of Sgt. English , obviously taken about the same time, with a different pose can be seen on page 244 of African American Faces of the Civil War: An Album by Ron Coddington along with much more information about Sgt. English.
A beautiful image in excellent condition.
