    Description

CALIFORNIA JOE TYPE WESTERN FIGURE CDV. Excellent CDV of a western frontiersman holding his pistol and rifle. This unidentified man was photographed by Wm. Shew of San Francisco and bears great resemblance to California Joe who served with Berdan’s Sharpshooters during the Civil War. Pictured here with a muzzleloader, gator head knife and the caption "Compromise" at the bottom of the photo. Shew could have made the image for the problems in the Pacific Northwest just before the Civil War. Image is very clean and crisp. The photographer, Shew, liked to take pictures of California oddities.
