Black Union Officer Captain William D. Matthews Carte de Visite. Images of black officers are scarce and this example is very clean. Matthews is shown in a vignetted portrait, in uniform, turned to his left. An inscription below the image identifies the man, but it is unknown in whose hand it is written. A.C. Nichols, Leavenworth, Kansas backstamp. Matthews served as a 2nd lieutenant with the Independent Battery, Kansas U.S. Colored Light Artillery. When the unit mustered in for Federal service, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant and assumed command after Capt. H. Ford Douglas fell ill. The mount shows light staining, but the image is unaffected. Minor damage to the upper edge touches the upper edge of the photograph.
