American Civil War Aeronaut and Inventor Thaddeus S. C. Lowe Carte de Visite and Autograph Letter Signed. Includes: (1) CDV of the inventor posed seated, approximately 2.5" x 4", with a Bogartus Photographer, New York studio mark on the verso. A sharp, clear image in fine condition. (2) One page ALS, 5.25" x 8", [New York], December 31, 1866, to James J. Ames. Lowe thanks American industrialist James Ames for his encouragement for his project and writes, in part: "The work is going on finely and we are receiving increased encouragement. All parts of the machinery is being built to withstand four times the strain required." The paper is age toned with some modest closed tears along the edges and old smoothed fold creases, otherwise it is a bright, legible example in very good condition. Thaddeus Lowe (1832-1913) is best remembered for his pioneering work in the field of aerial reconnaissance by balloon during the Civil War, being appointed the Chief Aeronaut of the Balloon Corps.
