    Description

    Alexander Asboth Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a bust portrait in uniform, with a Piffet, New Orleans backstamp (part of the name on the imprint has been rubbed off) on verso. Signed below the image: "A. Asboth." With an orange 2 cent George Washington stamp on verso.

    Alexander Sandor Asboth (1811-1868), a Hungarian expatriate, first served as chief of staff to General John Frémont. He was later wounded at the Battle Pea Ridge, where his arm was fractured by a musket ball. After his recovery, he commanded a brigade of the Army of the Mississippi. He was again wounded at the Battle of Marianna, but survived and was brevetted major general by Andrew Johnson.

    Condition: Light uneven toning. There is a small tear to the top left corner. Boldly signed.
