    Addison Ball Chinn of Morgan's Raiders Carte de Visite. 2.25" x 4", with a Cargo's Photographic Rooms, Pittsburgh imprint on verso. A standing portrait of Chinn wearing a long frock coat and holding his hat in his hand. Written in pencil on verso is "Lt A.B. Chinn Lee Ky." Addison B. Chinn (1833-1902) joined the Confederate army against his father's wishes and enlisted in the 8th Kentucky Cavalry. He fought with Morgan's Raiders until he was taken prisoner on July 20, 1863 during an Ohio raid. He spent nearly two years in various Union prisons and was part of the Confederate prisoner group the Union army used as "human shields" during the siege of Charleston. This portrait was taken while Chinn was being held as a prisoner of war at the Western Penitentiary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This image of Chinn can be found in Ronald S. Coddington's Faces of the Confederacy: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories, on page118. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout. Darkening along the upper edges. There is a small tear and paper loss at the lower edge of the albumen. Minor corner wear.
