Absolutely Exquisite Portrait Of A Civil War Federal Officer With Presentation To His Wife. Absolutely one of the most remarkable quality Civil War images we've ever seen. Sixth plate size oval in dark blue velvet push button case. Although initially giving the impression of an ivorytype the image is actually albumen and then entirely hand colored. Really as much a miniature painting as a photographic image. The original paper seal incorporating glass and image is still intact. Both the finest for quality and condition. The officer is an infantry Lt. Col. wearing double breasted frock coat with silver oak leaves. Virtually every hair in his beard and on his head has been individually colored, a really beautiful image. The white silk pad bears an ink script note, "A happy New Years present to my dear Wife / Jany 1st 1863." Case with just the slightest edge wear on the velvet otherwise the entire piece is absolutely pristine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
