    Description

Abraham Lincoln and George B. McClellan: Trio of Cartoon Cartes-de-Visite. Three cartoon CDVs, including two we have not seen before. The first probably dates from the time of the Secession Crisis, before Lincoln was inaugurated. It shows Lincoln with light whiskers beginning to sprout, with a padlock on his mouth. He holds a club at the ready. An imp or devil watches from the bushes in the background. Silsbee, Case & Company of Boston label on verso. Lincoln was keeping mum on the situation prior to being inaugurated in Washington, although indicating he might have "to put the foot down". The second CDV, dated 1863, shows a scantily-clad Lincoln, captioned "The Latent Hercules". The third CDV shows Lincoln defeated in a game of chess by McClellan (captioned "Check-Mated.") while Columbia points Lincoln to the exit. J. Gurney & Son back mark.
