4th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers: Carte-de-Visite Album. Leather photo album with brass hardware, gold-stamped on the cover: "Officer's Album. 4th N.H.V." It contains a total of thirty-seven [37] CDVs, most of which are identified. Twenty-five of the soldiers served in the 4th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. The regiment was organized in Manchester and was active from September 18, 1861 to August 23, 1865. They lost 234 men during service (3 officers and 82 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded). They served mostly in Florida and the Carolinas, seeing action at Port Royal, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the Crater, Fair Oaks, Bermuda Hundred, New Market Heights, Wilmington, and others. Their commander was Col. Thomas J. Whipple whose portrait appears first in the album. The photographers represented in the album are mainly New Hampshire and Boston galleries, plus Beaufort, S.C. Four of the men appear in civilian clothing, the balance in uniform. Two images are signed on the front and two on the back. There are five unidentified officers and two who apparently served in Maine and Pennsylvania regiments, plus five identified Union generals. Excellent condition overall. Accompanied by a reprint of a regimental roster originally published in 1896.
