[Texas Rangers]. S. P. Elkins Photograph, circa 1930s. 8" x 10" silver print. This ¾ portrait pictures veteran Texas Ranger S. P. Elkins, age ninety two, pointing his pistol at the camera with one hand while clutching his cane with the other. Elkins served in the Frontier Battalion under Captain Rufus Perry in 1874. Minor bumping to corners.

    More Information:

At the time of the Texas Centennial Exposition, held at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas, in 1936, Elkins, then a resident of Tishomingo, Oklahoma, was the oldest living registered former Texas Ranger. During a convention of veteran Rangers held at the time, Elkins recalled several encounters with Indians in which he had participated, admitting to only being responsible for one Indian fatality, which occurred in 1870 during his time with the Frontier Battalion.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
