"Texas Jack" Omohundro: Signed Carte de Visite. Gurney & Son of New York issued this carte de visite picturing the famous scout and frontiersman, John Baker "Texas Jack" Omohundro (1846-1880). Though born in Virginia, he moved to Texas in his teens and served as a scout and courier for Jeb Stuart in the Civil War. In the post-war period, he participated in cattle drives on the Chisholm Trail, earning his nickname from grateful consumers in Arkansas. He then befriended Buffalo Bill Cody. The two fought Indians, hunted buffalo and served as guides on organized buffalo hunts. They then turned to the stage, appearing in 1872 in Chicago in Ned Buntline's production of "Scouts of the Prairie." His exploits were popularized through a series of dime novels. He died of pneumonia at age 33 in Leadville, Colorado. This CDV was likely issued in conjunction with one of his performances. It is inscribed by the cowboy-turned-thespian on the back: "To Old Boy Will Covert from his friend Texas. Jack." Outside of some minor wear to the lower corners, it is in very fine condition.
