    [South Carolina]. Hilton Head, Folly, and Morris Islands: Four Cartes de Visite including: Head Quarters of the General Commanding, Dept. of the South. 4" x 2.5". The building, located on Hilton Head Island, sits directly on the beach. Photographed by New York photographer G.T. Lape. [and:] General Quincy Adams Gillmore's Tent. 4" x 2.5". Located on Folly Island, the tent is seen through the trees in the distance. Taken in 1863 by G.T. Lape. At the time, Gillmore (1825-1888) was in command of the Department of the South. [and:] U.S. Sanitary Commission Building. 4" x 2.5". The three story building is seen from outside the front gate, above which hangs the U.S.S.C. sign. A man is seen standing leisurely in front of the gate. The United States Sanitary Commission, a civilian organization that was the forerunner of the American Red Cross, had a brief but very important role in bringing medical aid and general support to Federal troops during and just after the Civil War. Cooley & Becket backstamp. [and:] Griffin A. Stedman Inscribed Photograph Signed. 2.5" x 4". Shown in full uniform, Stedman holds his gloves in his left hand. Below his image he has written, "Your attached[?] friend [signed] Griff Stedman." Stedman (1838-1864) enlisted as a captain in the 5th Connecticut Infantry on June 22, 1861, and was quickly promoted to major in the 11th Connecticut Infantry (November 27, 1861). Wounded at the Battle of Antietam, he was promoted to colonel, but died two years later in the fighting around Petersburg, Virginia. He was given a brevet promotion to brigadier general the day he died. All are in very good or better condition.
