[Leopold I, King of Belgium] Collection of ten cartes-de-visite depicting the funeral of Leopold I (1790-1856). Various scenes include: the procession through the crowd lined streets; a scene of the royal family in mourning standing at a verandah looking out at the procession, the King lying in state, the funeral mass, and a photo from life of the elaborate coffin wagon. All cartes bear a Ghemar Freres, Bruxelles photo stamp on mount on recto and verso. In mint condition. Leopold was asked to become King by the Belgian National Congress upon the country's independence from the Netherland in 1831. He was a master of diplomacy, and managed to steer Belgium clear of the many revolutions unfolding in Europe. Leopold was uncle to Queen Victoria of England, and helped to arrange her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
