[Female Union Soldier]. Francis Clayton Carte de Visite. Affixed to a 2.5" x 4" S. Masury, Boston mount, Mrs. Clayton, known as "Jack Williams," poses in this full length studio portrait in full uniform, holding a saber. A pencil inscription on the verso, written in an unknown hand, reads, "Frances [illegible] Clatin 4 mo heavy artilery Co I 13 mo Cavelry Co A 22 months." Near fine condition.

Frances Clalin Clayton enlisted in the Union Army to fight next to her husband, Elmer L. Clayton. Both enlisted in a Missouri regiment. Her husband was killed during the Battle of Stones River in December 1862. She is said to have fought at Fort Donelson and at least seventeen other engagements, having been wounded several times and taken prisoner on one occasion. Though the details are unclear, it was discovered sometime in 1863 that she was a woman and she was discharged from service.
