    Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: CDV of Commander of Lincoln Body Guard. Carte-de-visite of "Col. Wilkeson Commander of President Lincoln's Body Guard." Photographer's credit: "J. T. Upson/ Buffalo, N.Y." While Colonel Samuel H. Wilkeson did serve throughout the war, we can find no documentation that he was part of the several military escorts that were detailed to follow the President when he traveled in public. Given the location of the photographer, we feel it is more likely that Wilkeson commanded the Honor Guard assigned the task of watching over Lincoln's remains during the funeral ceremonies in Buffalo.
