Union Major General Daniel Edgar Sickles: Inscribed Albumen Cabinet Card. Approximately 4.25" x 6.5", with a Sarony, New York studio mark on the lower recto. Sickles is posed seated in full military regalia, his arm through his crutches. Inscribed on the verso: "To Comrade Charles Sonnenberg / of 70th N. Y. Infantry / Sickles' Brigade, / 3rd Army Corps / Army of the Potomac / from / Major General D. Sickles U.S. Army. / Commander of the 3rd Army Corps / New York Dec. 1 1892". Charles Sonnberg (proper spelling) enlisted on April 24, 1861 in New York City. He was discharged for disability on November 26, 1862. Dan Sickles (1819-1914) was a colorful and controversial military officer who lost his leg to a cannon ball at Gettysburg. This is a superb post-war image with modest age toning to the verso and a trivial blemish at the upper edge of the recto side, which we mention for the sake of accuracy.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
