DescriptionUnion General William Birney and Staff Albumen, with a Lieut. Joseph Prime Autograph Letter Signed. The oval albumen is centered on a paperboard (10" x 8") and features the abolitionist general with three young members of his staff identified on the reverse as Capt. L. L. Weld, Lt. D. V. Purington, and "Boteler[?]." General Birney recruited and commanded colored troops. Other penciled notations appear on the reverse, though no photographer's imprint does. The albumen and card are heavily age toned with dampstaining; the upper left corner of the card is missing, though the image is not affected.
Also included is a Lieut. Joseph H. Prime ALS, referring to this photo, which he sent to his wife in May 1864. Prime was commissioned into Co. "G", U.S. Colored Troops 7th Infantry, in November 1863.
