Ulysses S. Grant Cabinet Card and Frederick Grant Typed Letter Signed. The cabinet card, measuring 4.25" x 6.5", features an oval portrait of President Grant, sitting in a chair in profile, minus his ubiquitous chin whiskers. Many years later, Grant's eldest son, Gen. Frederick D. Grant, sent the accompanying one page letter, 8" x 10.5", on Headquarters Department of the Lakes letterhead, Chicago, April 26, 1910, to H.W. Fay explaining the unusual photograph, in part: "I write to say that my father shaved and had the photograph taken for the purpose of securing a profile for my mother who desired to have a cameo made. She did not like this picture, and father permitted his beard to grow again. I think the negative was taken by the Government photographer at the Treasury Department, but I am not sure of this." The letter exhibits the usual folds with small spots of foxing. Mounting remnants on the verso. The unique photograph of Grant is in near pristine condition.
