DescriptionTEXAS SHERIFF ALBERT BODEMAN OF KENDALL CO. - SCENE FROM THE PINEY WOODS NEAR CROCKETT, TEXAS - IMPERIAL CARD - ca. 1880-95.
Albert Bodeman is identified as the man on the left, standing proudly with his companion after having wedge cut an enormous Texas evergreen tree. Albert Bodeman served several consecutive terms as the Sheriff of Kendall County, Texas from 1884-1897. This is a very unique Texas photograph in that it not only captures the image of a County Sheriff, but also the cutting methods of early loggers. Trees of this size are almost extinct throughout Texas, as they were mostly cut down during the expansion period of 1850-1900. The slightly undersize Imperial card measures 6.5" x 8.5" and has 2" chips out of both the bottom right corner and top left. On the reverse side there is a period notation in pencil, "Near Crockett, Texas ---- Albert Bodeman late sheriff of Kendall Co. 1884-97". This photograph is a great early Texas image with strong tonality and unusual subject matter.
