    Description

Soapy Smith "Tragedy" Photo Montage. This 9.5" x 7.5" photo affixed to a 13" x 10" mount is titled "Actors and Scenes in the Soapy Smith Tragedy". It was issued by Case & Draper of Skaguay, Alaska in July 1898. The photos relate to the "Shootout on Juneau Wharf". Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith was a notorious con man and bunko artist who terrorized citizens of Colorado and Alaska. He paid off local politicians and law enforcement officials and headed a gang of thugs to thwart the efforts of vigilante groups. When miner John Douglas Stewart lost $2,700 in a crooked three-card monte game, Smith was accosted by Frank Reid at the Juneau Company Wharf. An exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of both men. This souvenir photo has a collage of thirteen graphic photos related to Smith's rise and fall.
