Sioux Leader Rain-in-the-Face: Cabinet Card by O. S. Goff. In a seated pose with a bemused look on his face, he is wearing a military jacket and a presidential peace medal with a large eagle feather in his braided hair. The verso bears the "O. S. Goff/ Bismarck,/ D.T." imprint at center and a penciled "Rain in face Sioux Chief" notation at bottom. A war chief of the Lakota tribe, he was among the Indian leaders who defeated George Custer's Seventh Cavalry at Little Bighorn. A poem, "The Revenge of Rain in the Face," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow perpetuated the legend that he cut the heart out of Thomas Custer in revenge for a previous unjust imprisonment. Rain-in-the-Face fled into Canada with other Hunkpapa, but surrendered his band in 1880 and was transferred to the Standing Rock Reservation. He died there in 1905. The photographer, Orlando Scott Goff opened his photography studio in Bismarck in 1873 and soon after became post photographer at Fort Abraham Lincoln; he mentored David F. Barry and taught him photography. Photo is in fine condition with wonderful clarity and contrast. Mount has a couple of minor nicks and inconsequential soiling at lower margin.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
