Sioux Leader Black Horn (Hey-Sa-Pah): Alexander Gardner Cabinet Card. Taken in 1872, the Hunkpapa Sioux is seated, his hair in braids and wrapped in cloth; he wears three eagle feathers in his hair, a printed scarf, a cloth shirt and vest, rings on his fingers and wool blanket around his waist. He is holding a U.S. Model 1840 sword in one hand and a paper fan in the other. On the verso are handwritten notes identifying him as "Black Horn +/ (Hey Sappa)". Later notes in ink indicate that this particular image was "purchased from Capt. Harry Gantz/ March 8, 1935". After the Civil War, Gardner was commissioned to photograph Indians who came to Washington for treaty talks, etc. Minor spotting, abrasions, and light soiling to photo and mount. Otherwise, very good. Mounting traces on verso.
