Description

    Sioux Chiefs Running Bear and Crow Man: Cabinet Card by J. N. Templeman. Crow Man standing at left and Running Bear seated at right. Both are wearing fringed, leather leggings and decorated moccasins. Each carries an ornate smoking pipe. Crow Man has a tobacco bag entirely decorated in porcupine quillwork, A folding, paper fan is in his right hand. On his chest is a breastplate made of bone hairpipes strung between strips of strap leather. Running Bear is identified as "2nd Chief" and Crow Man as "3rd Chief" at Fort Thompson, D.T., Agency of the Crow Creek Reservation. The Head Chief of the Yanktonais at Crow Creek in this period was White Ghost. Photographer J. N. Templeman homesteaded and set up his business at Miller, D.T. (now South Dakota), specializing in images of prairie life as well as Indian portraits. Photograph is sharp and clear. Photo and mount exhibit general light spotting.
