Sioux Chief Spotted Tail: Albumen Cabinet Photograph by J.N. Choate, Circa 1879. Seated full-length portrait of Spotted Tail (Sinte Galeshka), a Brule Lakota tribal chief. The great warrior-turned-peacemaker has a single eagle feather in his hair and is wearing a traditional beaded chest piece and robes. Spotted Tail declined to participate in the Great Sioux War, instead focusing on speaking for peace and defending the rights of his tribe. In pursuit of these endeavors, he made several trips to Washington, D.C., as a statesman, representing the Sioux people in front of President Ulysses S. Grant and the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Ely S. Parker. Chief Spotted Tail was photographed at J.N. Choate's Carlisle, Pennsylvania studio. Studio imprint is on the mount, below the image. Inked on verso: "Spotted Tail/ Grand Chief/ of all/ the/ Dakotas/ 1879". Slight corner wear and minor soiling. 4.25" x 6.5".
