DescriptionSeries of Five Albumen Imperial Cabinet Cards From Chester A. Arthur's 1883 Trip to Yellowstone. A rare set of five sepia octavo (6.75" x 9.75") photographs taken by Professor F. J. Haynes. The photographs feature President Chester A. Arthur (1830-1886) and his mounted party in beautiful western settings (mountains, lakes, trees) and some taken on the plains. One photograph depicts a long line of mounted Indians who came to greet Arthur, many of whom are holding umbrellas over their heads. Forty-four enlisted men and four officers of the U.S. Army were detailed to protect Arthur on his trip. A photograph of the mounted detachment is included in the series. All photographs are mounted on the photographer's mounting board. On the left margin of each card is printed "National Pacific Views", on the right side "Haynes Photo Fargo" and at the bottom is printed "President Arthur's Journey Through Wyoming". There are profuse notes written in pencil on the verso of each photograph. The photographs are in good to very good condition with liberal amounts of foxing to the images.
Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) was a prolific photographer who traveled throughout North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Western Canada. He was a photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, the Black Hills Stage Company, and the Puget Sound and Alaska Steam Ship Line. He operated studios out of Fargo, North Dakota; Yellowstone Naional Park; St. Paul, Minnesota; and a traveling railroad studio along the Northern Pacific line. In 1883, he was named the official photographer for President Chester A. Arthur's trip to Yellowstone.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
