Robert E. Lee and Other Important Confederate Generals Photograph at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, August 1869. The photograph (7.75" 5.75") taken at White Sulphur Springs is affixed to a mount measuring 10" x 8" and features General Lee and his officers, likely at their first gathering since surrendering at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. Seated to General Lee's right is Bacque Bey, the Turkish envoy to the U.S.; to Lee's left are seated George Peabody (a philanthropist), William W. Corcoran (a philanthropist), and James Lyons (a Richmond lawyer). Left to right standing: James Conner, Martin W. Gary, John B. Magruder, Robert D. Lilley, P. B. T. Beauregard, Alexander Lawton, Henry A. Wise, and Joseph L. Brent. Lee visited White Sulphur Springs on doctor's orders to alleviate his rheumatism (which was likely a more serious heart condition). Penciled notations below the image and on the reverse identify most of the subjects. Stains and some soiling on the photo and the mount don't detract from the occasion.
