Commerce and Religion in Late 19th Century America

Religion and Commerce: Mounted Photographs of Mennonites in Rural Oklahoma and Commerce in a Large City, Circa 1899. Includes: (1) Imperial cabinet card photograph of a busy city market street, possible Fulton Market, Chicago, before the turn of the century. Many of the shop signs can be distinctly identified including R. D. Jones Meat Market, Charley's Place Restaurant, "Sau the Snake Eater", and many other interesting establishments. A wonderfully detailed image worthy of further research. Excellent condition. (2) Imperial cabinet card of a congregation of Mennonites at Mennoville church in El Reno, Oklahoma, Indian Territory, circa 1899. Verso is annotated in ink: "C. C. Voth / Mennoville / Reno City / P. O. / I. T." The crowd appears gathered for a pot-luck lunch after church. Great visual content, sharp and clear with small details easily seen. One trivial area of loss at the lower right corner, otherwise in excellent condition. From the estate collection of E.F. Mueller.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
