Images Taken in the Aftermath of Wounded Knee

Pine Ridge Agency: Pair of Albumen Boudoir Cabinet Card Photos Taken at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota, Circa 1891. Both images are from the studio of W. R. Cross, Portrait and View Photographer, Hot Springs, South Dakota. The lot includes: (1) "Lieutenant Taylor and seven of his Indian Scouts, Pine Ridge Agency, Jan. 19th, 1891." A stirring image taken only twelve days after the Wounded Knee massacre, showing Lt. George W. Taylor seated with another unidentified officer, Winchester rifles on each man's lap. Behind them stand six Indian Scouts of Troop A, in uniform, armed with revolvers and Springfield trapdoor carbines. Of note is the fact that Lt. Taylor's nose is bandaged, whether or not it was an injury sustained at the battle is unknown to this cataloger. (2) "Pine Ridge Agency. Indians." The image features approximately twenty Indian warriors, several armed with lever-action Winchester rifles, standing around a wooden watch tower, which probably overlooks the agency's cattle pens. Gathered around them are many non-Indian spectators and agency personnel. A superb pair of images, clear and rife with detail. Excellent condition. From the estate collection of E.F. Mueller.
