    Description

Lynching of Three Blacks Cabinet Card Photo. Public lynchings were used after the Civil War as a way of enforcing white political, social, and economic dominance. This photo is actually a sepia-toned composite photo of four other photos. The top three show three young black men in full-length poses, all dressed nicely and holding guns. It is captioned at the very top "11 AM"; just beneath that are their names. The larger photo below is captioned "11 PM" and shows these same three men all hanging from the branches of a tall tree. Beneath the tree are several people standing around, some looking at the photographer, some looking at the three black men. What a chilling image! The photographer is identified below as "S. S. Griffith & Co." at 305 Main St. in Clifton Forge, Virginia. The condition is excellent; the card itself is embossed around the edges and has rounded corners as made.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
