Lot of two Imperial Size Birdseye View Photographs of "Central City, South Dakota" Before & After Fire ca 1880s. Thanks to General George Custer's expedition to this northwestern section, gold was discovered at Deadwood Gulch in the fall of '76. The resulting gold rush in the spring of '77 had the Black Hills area booming. The larger towns of Deadwood, Lead City, and Central City, plus the smaller settlements of Gayville, Spearfish, Galena, and Sturgis were full of prospectors and miners.

Scarce image by H. R. Locke & Co. of Deadwood, South Dakota (Gilded), is a birds-eye view of this very small Gold Rush mining town. Has a lot of wooden buildings and railroad tracks in town. This image has period ink on mount "Central City S. D.". The second image possibly photographed by H. R. Locke (no identification), depicts Central City after the Fire of April 25th, 1888. A few less buildings then. Printed on plate "Central City" Sep. 14th 1888, 5 Months after the terrible fire of April 25th 1888. Early image measures approximately 10" x 8". After fire image 10.50" x 8.25".

Condition: Very good-fine, early image has scratches in middle, also dirt on mount and after fire image, has small chip in albumen and mount as cracks
