Description

Large Civil War Albumen View of "No. 300 - Engines Stored In Washington, D.C." Bright crisp image 8 ¾" X just over 12". Paperboard mount 10 ½" X 14". Printed paper label attached below the image "No. 300 - Engines Stored In Washington, D. C. / To prevent their falling into rebel hands, in case of raid on Alexandria" Photographer unidentified but doubtless very early war. At least ten locomotives and tenders lined up 'bumper to bumper' on the tracks, buildings visible in left background. Group of kids gathered at the back of the rear tender with a few spectators standing about. Brick sidewalk lined with trees and street lamp visible in the foreground indicating the location is actually in the city. Image perfect. Mount with a couple of corner chips and someone has written in ink in lower right corner "original Civil War photo". Impressive image in exceptional condition and the first example we've ever seen.
