Description

JESSE JAMES GANG MEMBERS - CLEL MILLER AND BILL STILES - VINTAGE CONTACT PRINT - ca.1900-1950.
This is a unusual postmortem image of Bill Stiles and Clem Miller with an old typed message attached to it. The photographic process is similar to that of a photo postcard, and the image itself is obviously a transfer with some loss of clarity. The image measures 9.75"x 7.25" overall and has rusted tack holes on every corner and side.

The typed card is original to the image and states the story how both men died in the famous James Gang Northfield, Minnesota raid, "Bill Stiles was shot by Manning. Clel Miller was killed by Wheeler who shot him through the heart...." This great image possibly resided in some sort of display judging by the card and the way it is written, perhaps as part of a larger set. A great postmortem image of two noted James Gang members after the thwarted robbery in Northfield, Minn.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
