    James A. Garfield Cabinet Photo and General Orders No. 8 Issuing Instructions Regarding Garfield's Burial. A formal partial profile portrait, 4.25" x 6.5". Hon. James A. Garfield is imprinted on the albumen. Pencil identification on the verso; toning and spots of foxing throughout. Together with General Orders No. 8, September 22, issued by General Sherman and signed in ink by William G. Mitchell. The orders inform that "the remains of the late President [Garfield] of the United States will be interred on Monday, the 26th... The Secretary of the War directs that labor on that day be suspended... flags at all military posts, stations, forts... will be kept at half-mast... and at twelve o'clock meridian twenty-one minute guns will be fired from all forts..." With mourning borders. Mounting adhesive residue on verso.
