    The end of the trail

Indians Surrender after Wounded Knee: Trio of Photographs. Three 4" x 5.25" mounted sepia tone photographs, possibly taken using a Kodak. Each depicts Native Americans on horseback traveling unhurriedly, as if in a funeral procession, with barbed wire fencing in the foreground on two examples. Each is identically inscribed on verso in the handwriting of Indian fighter Frank D. Baldwin: "Pine Ridge Agency S.D./ Indians coming in to surrender/ Jan. 15th 1891". Mounts slightly cupped. Baldwin spent over twenty years fighting Indians and was glad to see the end of hostilities. These photos, possibly unpublished, have a dreamlike or ethereal quality to them. Given the context (two weeks after Wounded Knee), they are especially poignant. From the Frank D. Baldwin Archive which we recently sold.
