George Armstrong Custer with Russian Grand Duke Alexis. This photo was taken by St. Louis photographer James Scholten in 1872, when Custer, along with "Buffalo Bill" Cody, guided a buffalo hunting expedition organized for the entertainment of Russia's Grand Duke Alexis. Offered here, however, is a second-generation copy produced by The Grabill Portrait Co., Deadwood, South Dakota. Comparison with the original Scholten print shows the expected slight deterioration of the photo quality. Minor light surface soiling and slight rounding of corners of the mat; overall very good condition. Small collectors' notations in ink and pencil on verso. Photo is 3.875" x 5", affixed to original 4.25" x 6.5" mat.
