Description

George Armstrong Custer: One Cabinet Card and One Government Report on the Massacre at Little Big Horn. Measuring 3.5" x 5", this iconic image shows Custer seated in a chair with his arms crossed over his chest. Mounted to a backing board to an overall size of 6" x 7". With a six page, 5.75" x 9" government report headed, "Message from the President . . . Transmitting, in compliance with a Senate resolution of July 7, 1876, information in relation to the hostile demonstrations of the Sioux Indians, and the disaster to the forces under General Custer." Included is a report from J. Donald Cameron, the secretary of war, regarding the rumors of Custer's fate, in part: "The recent reports touching the disaster which befell a part of the Seventh Regular Cavalry, led by General Custer in person, are believed to be true. For some reason as yet unexplained, General Custer . . . attacked en route a large Indian village, with only a part of his force, having himself detached the rest, with a view to intercept the expected retreat of the savages, and experienced an utter annihilation of his immediate command." An additional report from General Phil Sheridan confirms the news. He adds that "of the movements of General Custer and the five companies under his immediate command scarcely anything is known from those who witnessed them; for no officer or soldier who accompanied him has yet been found alive." Unevenly toned. Pages are sewn together, but are separating and there is loss of paper along the vertical fold. Left edge is chipped.
