Fort Sumter: Confederate Albumen Photograph. Taken two days after Union Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort following a thirty-four hour bombardment, this albumen, titled "South-West Angle of Fort Sumter, Showing portion of officer's Quarters, with Gorge and Soldiers' Barracks on the West side of Parade, with part of Flag Staff, April 15, 1861," measures 7.5" x 5.25" and shows the destruction laid down by Confederate artillery, destruction in which, miraculously, no one was killed. The photograph, which was likely taken by either F.K. Houston or George S. Cook, both of whom were from Charleston, is affixed to a mount measuring 9.25" x 7.5". The mount is damaged near the upper left and lower right corners. Staple holes appear near the upper edge and at the left and right edges. There are also scattered foxing spots. The image itself has rounded corners. The entire piece is matted to an overall size of 11.5" x 9.5".
