Recto of mat has a description of the Cotton Market, provided by the Philadelphia Museums. The photograph shows a town square in Montgomery where black farmers have gathered to sell bales of cotton. The few white men in the photo are likely buyers, who would inspect the bales before purchasing.

Condition: Silvering around edges, with areas of soiling at top right corner. Edges of mat are worn and slightly chipped.
