Description

Chief Washakie: Albumen Cabinet Photo by William Henry Jackson, Circa 1871. Full-length, seated portrait of the famed Shoshone Indian Chief Washakie at South Pass, Wyoming, mounted on a card with the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey imprint. Washakie wear simple, unadorned clothing, with the exception of a slide holding his neckerchief. He is holding a light colored hat and his gaze is directed off camera. This image was taken during U.S. Geologist F.V. Hayden's pioneering Survey of the Territories, also known as the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871. Washakie was likely photographed either by William Henry Jackson, Hayden's official photographer, or Charles Milton Bell, who accompanied Jackson on the survey and took numerous photographs that later were erroneously attributed to Jackson. The photograph is captioned in the negative: "WASHAKIE." "SHOSHONEE." Some trivial staining and scratching, otherwise condition is very good. 4.25" x 6.5".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
