Chief Ouray of the Utes: A Rare Cabinet Photo. A compelling, stately William Henry Jackson image of this important Ute leader from Colorado. Ouray was instrumental in the signing of the peace treaty between the Tabeguache band of Utes and the United States government in 1863, during which period he was a close associate of Kit Carson. He went to Washington, D.C., in 1868 and 1872 on behalf of his people, and was granted a quite substantial $1,000-per year annuity from the government for his role in putting down the Ute uprising of 1879. This is an oversized cabinet photo measuring 4.5" x 7" and has Jackson's studio imprint on verso. Basically in very presentable condition, with minor wear and some staining/soiling to the mount, and minor discoloration to the image.
