    Description

Chief Joseph: Albumen Cabinet Photograph by D. F. Barry, Circa 1877. Iconic bust portrait of Chief Joseph, the chief of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of Nez Perce Indians. Chief Joseph's principled resistance to attempts to remove his band and the other "non-treaty" Indians to reservations led to his reputation as a humanitarian and peacemaker. Chief Joseph is regal with his hair in traditional braids and a bandolier over his left shoulder. This card was circulated by D.F. Barry, a gifted pioneer photographer who photographed many famous Native Americans. Barry was known to his native subjects as "Icastinyanka Cikala Hanzi" or "The Little Shadow Catcher," due to his ability to capture their images onto paper. Present on card mount is applied label, "Chief Joseph", ink notation, "Nez Perce", and Barry's Bismarck, Dakota studio imprint. Barry studio imprint on the verso is partially covered by exhibit label for the Second International Congress of Eugenics, September 22 to October 22, 1921 at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City. Pin holes at top and bottom of card. 4.25" x 6.5".
