Description

Carlisle Indian School: Albumen Cabinet Photo of Thirty-Four Children by J.N. Choate, Circa 1880s. Scarce photographic portrait montage of Indian students at the Carlisle Indian School at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Carlisle school was the first off-reservation Indian boarding school in the country, and the institution's mission was to assimilate Indian children from diverse tribes into one common culture, and prepare them to work and socialize in white society. This included giving students English names and dressing them in European-style clothing. It is notable some of the students pictured are wearing native dress, perhaps to highlight the transformation the school provided. While the portraits are visually arresting, the series is also significant as a visual anthropological document. Printed label on verso identifies each portrait. Some corner wear and several pin holes on mount and print, small area of loss on bottom right corner of print. Some damage to verso, but does not affect readability of text. 4.25" x 6.5".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
