Albumen Photograph of Richmond, Virginia's "Old Stone House" by George S. Cook, late nineteenth century, 10" x 8" with mount, 16" x 13" modern matt. Sometimes referred to as "Washington's Headquarters", the "Old Stone House" is Richmond's oldest building and the city's only pre-Revolutionary structure extant. It currently houses the Edgar Allen Poe Museum. This delightful image was captured by George S. Cook (1819 - 1902), an early Southern photographer who is well-known for his wartime portraits of many Confederate notables. Here Cook captures a moment when Richmond children - black and white - lined up to pose in front of the old building. The verso is imprinted by Cook's studio, is stamped "the Library of J. Wm. Black", and has a penciled line reading "Washington's Headquarters". A wonderful, lightly aged sepia print in very fine condition.
