    Description

Abraham Lincoln: C. S. German Cabinet Card. O-42, taken by Christopher S. German in Springfield on January 13, 1861. Considered the first photograph of Lincoln wearing a full beard. Matted and framed. A specially-cut window on the back side reveals a printed caption by Herbert Wells Fay of DeKalb, Illinois. Fay gives the history of the photograph, claiming it was taken by "Photographer McNulta". He also claims to possess the original wet plate glass negative "recently purchased by a syndicate of relic hunters, and in possession of the undersigned." This copy image was printed off the original negative, according to Fay, although it appears to have been cropped in a "tombstone" format. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
